Solar energy in Northern Ireland

solar energy in Northern Ireland by EnvirotekenergyGenerating your own electricity for free through solar PV in Northern Ireland should be enough of an incentive for you to invest in solar panels for your property. Still not convinced? By generating your own free electricity, you won’t need to use as much energy from your energy supplier, generating your own electricity with solar PV means your energy bills will be reduced. You will also cover the cost of the solar panels long before the life span of the system, meaning you can enjoy the benefits of an extra tax free income.

As well as the money you will be saving by generating your own free electricity, there is an additional incentive called Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation Certificates (NIROCs) which was launched in April 2005.

Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs/NIROCs)

Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation Certificates (NIROCs) are certificates that are issued by the Authority to accredited operators of renewable generating stations for the renewable solar energy in Northern Ireland that they generate.

ROCs are calculated that each megawatt hour (MWh) generated equates to one ROC. These ROCs are then potentially traded with other parties to ensure that energy suppliers are meeting their criteria.

How do ROCs work

The current rate of 1 ROC for generators currently stands at 5.59p/kWh
(From 1 October 2013 – 30 September 2014)

Solar Energy in Northern Ireland Export tariff

For any excess solar energy that you generate and don’t use, you will export this back to the grid and your energy supplier will pay you at the rate of what the export tariff is currently set at.

Currently, the export tariff rate is set at:

From October 1 2013 – September 30 2014Rate
For generators up to 50kW5.59p/kWh

The difference between NIROCs and the Feed-inTariff (FIT)

NIROCs and FIT are 2 schemes for solar energy in Northern Ireland pioneered by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) that allow you to sell your clean generated energy with a financial return for your contribution towards reducing carbon emissions.
